Exposure therapy involves working with a therapist to gradually expose yourself to the very thing you are afraid of until it no longer produces anxiety. For someone with a needle phobia this may mean looking at pictures of syringes, then looking at an actual syringe, and so on until one feels comfortable getting a shot. It’s important to go at a pace with which you are comfortable so a feeling of competence is achieved. By exposing yourself to your fears you see that the worst-case scenario does not happen, you won’t “go crazy,” and anxiety does diminish. Working with a therapist versed in exposure therapy can help you to brainstorm to create incrementally more anxiety inducing exposures (called a fear hierarchy), keep you on task in going through with the exposures, and work to challenge any negative self-talk such as, “I can’t do this,” or “It’s just too scary.” You can overcome your phobia and we can help!
